MICHAEL BARNES

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My work is based in self-investigation and a reflection of my subconscious. The work often depicts solitary figures that exist within vacuous environment. The figures are often bound within these spaces, while being tempted or agitated by particular elements.

Mystery and ambiguity play a large role in the work. While I intentionally limit the amount of information or narrative given, I provide clues to instigate an attempt to interpret. In turn, I wish to allow the viewer room for their own interpretation.

The Majority of my work is produced through various printmaking media. I choose the printmaking medium due to its close relationship to drawing, as well as for the affects that I can achieve. Working methods is an important element in my work. I believe in a proper balance between concept and aesthetic.
